The Dominican Republic has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen, but the water is terribly polluted with all types of waste that comes down from Santo Domingo (the capital city). We stayed in an All Inclusive facility, which is a must, as it is not really safe to travel around unaccompanied. We did enjoy the 3-hour drive and visit in Santo Domingo, as it is rich with history, but were very glad we went with a tour group. These are a very poor people and unfortunately crime and violence are an everyday part of their lives.
